Mail it in Film Friday’s!

Hey ya’ll , well the season out East is about to wind down, this weekend is pretty much all she wrote for many Eastern rivers…save a few sections of the Chat and Ausable. BUT! that doesn’t mean we cant get our fix of Fish porn for your filthy….filthy minds 😉

We’ll kit start it off this week with a tribute to my main man MG who recently spent some much needed time down in Hilton Head, SC chasing relaxation…and Red’s!
MG spent his time in a kayak stalking tailing red’s for a few days, and apparently it ain’t easy, as they spook easily while their heads are buried in the mud chasing crabs and shrimp, but as always, MG doesn’t disappoint…

A nice SC Red caught on the fly

Just to drive home the point of how beautiful it is in Hilton Head (Golfing Mecca to some), here’s a little diddy for ya…I think you know this guy, MG! 😉

If you’ve been following Frostheaves at all this past summer, you know that I love Smallmouth Bass…and really, if you’re a trout bum who “poopoo’s” fishing for Smallmouth…well you’re dumb…yes I said you were not smart 😉 Smallmouth are maybe the best fish you could catch, they strike hard (usually on the surface), fight even harder, and are incredible acrobats and plain just don’t really give a fudge! And really are quite a pretty fish.

Here’s a nice long one about Oregon Steelhead there are some good fish shots, but the video is more than just about the take. I’ve never been Steelheading and I’m pretty sure I’m missing out on something amazing…it shall be done soon!

And last but DEFINITELY not least, some BIG browns from NZ…ahhh New Zealand…now that’s Mecca….

Have a great Weekend !

Hey everybody! How’s it going!
Temps are cooling down out east and rains have come…THANK GAAAAAD!

MG and I were able to get out last Sunday and did “OK” we each lost what was for sure a Trophy each after 2-3 head shakes…a lesson for you all…SHARPEN YOUR HOOKS regularly, and focus!!!

I’ll hopefully be getting out another day or two over the last 2 weeks of the season so they’re definitely be some updates for ya’ll. For now, however, here is another mail it in Film Friday’s…after the Friday where I wasn’t able to “mail it in”…stupid work that pays me! PFFFF!

This first film is from NZ and gave me the shivers, maybe it’s the ominous background music…maybe its the sheer awesomeness of this battle, start to finish…

Ok, this one is down right DIRTY!!! HUGE Pike on the Fly. Just watch for the wake….absolutely BANANAS!!!!

That’s it for this edition folks.

Tight lines and talk soon.

Up State NY sneak away

This past weekend I took the opportunity to sneak down to the Malone, NY are to get on a river. Due to the HOT weather in  the East this summer and very little rain I’d been Bassin’ all summer and hadn’t been on a river since mid July! So I was over due!

I was rewarded! in just under 5 hours I brought 5 fish to hand.

It started with a #16 October Caddis dry and a small, but pretty 6″ Rainbow.

The BWO’s were coming off in the late morning sun but there was no surface activity, and after a few more casts to some hot looking holes with no interest from any fish, I switched to a #18 Tung head Pheasant Tail trailed by a Lafontaine Caddis emerger. I immediately was nailed by this nice brown, who took the caddies pupa…

Nice 16″ Brownie

I ended up bringing a few more of roughly 12″-14″ to hand, so I left the river early enough to make my girl Sunday night dinner.

It was a good day.

Finally a Mail it in Film Friday..or anything for that matter!

You all know what they say: Bloggin’ ain’t easy

To anyone who was following Frost Heaves before my lengthy hiatus, I both thank you and apologies to you at the same time. I’m sure you all were spending your weeks, especially Friday’s at home, crying in a dark room waiting for our next post, never seeing anything.

Well open the shudders and let the sun shine in! We’re back!

While I’ve spent just one day on a river the past month and a half, I have been nailing Small Mouth all summer, both in the Laurentian region of Quebec, and even one luck weekend in the Gatineau Hills with my Boy Wes…Obviously there were no pictures since I tend to always neglect to bring my camera when I need it and I’m always too concerned about the fish’s well being that to grab a snap.

But in order to quell your hunger for Fish porn, may I present to you the latest instalment of Mail it in film Friday’s…. and not to worry, I have a trip planned each weekend until seasons end, so the posts will follow…tight lines & enjoy!

We kick it off with pretty sick film from teh Rio Grande and some Sea run Browns…Yup, Sea run Browns…

This one if for my Brah MG who’ll be in the Colorado high country in 2 weeks…

This next one is definitely cool! Fishing in Tuscany??? Wow, looks pretty neat!

Last but never least we head down to the Faulklands, and their Governor Nigel haywood. This one is my favourite so far today as I can really relate (I think we all can) to what this fine sir is speaking about while on the banks of a river or lake.

Tight lines and have a great weekend!

Tie ’em up son!!!

Yes yes, its been quite a while since we all read about dear ol’ Walter, and for that I apologize, but life gets in the way sometimes.

I’ve been very busy as of late and have not had the chance to hit the water; The few chances I have had, thunder storms have put me quickly back on the banks. But we gotta talk about something!

This past winter I really got into tying my own flies, I felt as though it was the next step in my progression to be a better angler, and boy did it feel good to catch my first fish on a fly I tied myself!

So I’ thought I’d share with you my favourite fly tying channel on You Tube….

Tightline Productions are often featured on the Orvis blog, and I have to say that having searched for pattern after pattern on the web, Tighline prod. have the best, most informative and concise instructional tying video’s out there.

Do yourself a favour and check them out…

Tight Lines!

…no pun intended…or was there?????

Walter? Walter can you hear me?

Who is Walter?

We all know Walter, he hangs out in your local Lake, river or stream, he is the undisputed king of your area. Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to catch a glimpse, maybe even hook ol’ Walter…but never got to meet him up close and personal like.

My “Uncle Al” from Whistler, BC, where, in my opinion, the angels live, has asked me to head out to Whistler to hang and fish on numerous occasions. Al’s a “man about town” over there so if you’re ever in Whistler or planning a trip out there, Alan is your guy…trust me! Just check out Whistler’s Best
Now and then the stars align between my finances and schedule, and I’ll get to spend a spell out there Snowboarding and fishing…though its been far too long since that’s happened. But never the less, Al keeps me abreast of what he’s been catching.

So I get text about a week back or so from Al, “Call me” is all it says, of course I obliged. I’m thrown into a conversation about Al’s spot, a private lake not to be named. I’m regaled with stories of a fish, a Rainbow, “you mean a Steel-Head al, right?” “No, a RAINBOW”. He tells me of this fish, and I’m finding it hard to take, but friends don’t lie to friends about fish, and Al is one of the better ones, so I had to believe him. But just in case, I needed to see this fish…I was promptly e-mailed these pictures.

Meet Walter

if you’ve ever held such a massive fish on your pontoon boat, you know what he’s dealing with here…

Ya, that’s right… incredible! That fish was in a relatively small lake in Central BC… caught on a 5wt!!

Just to show you how camping/fishing can be with Al…

And then there’s the other fish…

a “decent” 20″ rainbow

umm, yes please

Mail it in Film Friday’s

Its Friday, tomorrow’s the weekend, are you fishing? Are you chilling? If you’re as lucky as I’ll be, you’re doing both. But if you’re un-lucky enough to be doing either, check out today’s mail it in Film Friday’s selection…Pitter Patter, Let’s get at ‘er!!!

The first video comes from our very own Bow river in Alberta…some of you are such lucky basta&*s that you can do this after a days work….sigh.

This next one, again, from our home waters in Québec’s Gaspésie region on the Bonaventure river. This is a video from the Hooké series. There has been a Hooké on the Restigouche, and now on the Bonaventure. SOme sweet sweet Atlantic footage, and actually is a super Rad video, these guys seem like awesome dudes…

I don’t care if the sun don’t shine I do my drinkin’ in the evening time, when Iiiiii’m in Rhode Island”
If you’re a city boy like me, then you’ll appreciate this video. One minute you’re in the heart of the city, the next, you’re in the middle of nowhere. We’re lucky as CRAP to be able to do that here in parts of North America, but especially here in Canada…eh!

I could post one or two more, but of those i found, I’ve given you the best! I’m on water this weekend so I’m sure you’ll hear about it on Monday or Tuesday!

Tight lines folks!
